More and more artists are including reproduction prints as part of their daily production routine. If you’re an art collector or an artist, you may already know that giclée fine art printing is the gold standard for producing museum-level quality prints.
What is Giclée Fine Art Printing?
In its most basic definition, giclée is a French term for “to spray” or “to squirt.” It references the inkjet printer’s process of reproducing fine art or photography to create individual copies of the original piece. It is important to note that not all inkjet printers produce giclée prints.
What’s the Main Difference between Giclée and Other Print Technologies?
Many traditional print technologies use the classic CMYK 4-color combination. Giclée printers use up to 12 individual colors. This gives a much smoother gradient transition and a wider color gamut leading to more depth and richness in the final print, which helps to create stunning vibrant artwork with amazing reproduction.
For an image to be printed as a giclée, it must be created at a resolution of no less than 300 to 600 dots per inch (DPI). For photo or conventional artwork reproduction, the camera or scanner used to capture the image or scan the artwork must be able optically to do so at 300 DPI.
What Materials Can You Print On?
Paper selection is vital to fine art printing. The paper quality and suitable ink technology are key to ensuring that the work is implemented correctly and will be durable enough to maintain (or even increase) its value to the artist and the collector. For long-lasting prints, you must account for the paper material, weight, finish, and other factors. Giclée printers can print on multiple substrates, including canvas, fine art papers, and acrylics!
