Pantone Colors of the Year 2021

2020 was a rough year for many. And yet, we continue to overcome uncertainty and adversity, spreading messages of hope, positivity, and perseverance. Reflecting upon the year, Pantone has selected PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating for Color of the Year. This is the second time in 22 years that Pantone chose two colors to represent a single year. Pantone describes these colors as “independent but complementary, representing a theme of unity and mutual support…the marriage of which represents strength, optimism, and fortitude following a markedly challenging year.”

TULIP – Your place at the table / ADHOC Architects

Montreal's downtown promenade utilizes actual illuminating lights strung up over tables and stools to brighten the space.

The project was designed with the collaboration of graphic designers Maude Lescarbeau and Camille Blais. The colorful installation was conceived to safely accommodate and attract citizens currently reappropriating Montreal’s downtown after several weeks of confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The layout is designed to offer passers-by a space to promenade or sit and relax while respecting current sanitation and social distancing norms.

MIT Beaver Works / Merge Architects

The multi-use research and collaboration space was developed for students, faculty, and technical professionals in the Tech Square hub near MIT’s Cambridge campus. Beaver Works, a joint center for MIT Lincoln Laboratory and MIT School of Engineering, serves as a workspace and showcase where students and faculty develop and test ideas for incorporation into the National Defense portfolio. Along with a research lab, this space incorporates a café/lounge area, meeting rooms, and a prototyping shop, where affiliates can carry out design/build research projects.
